Tobibur Rahman Masum, chief reporter of Rajshahi-based daily Sonali Sangbad died at the coronavirus unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital last night.

Just hours after the 52-year-old’s death, his test results came back negative for coronavirus, his wife Rebeka Sultana said.

Masum had been suffering from high fever since June 17 and also complained of mild breathing problems. His sample was collected on Friday, his wife added.

Yesterday evening, Masum was taken to the RMCH coronavirus unit set up at the Christian Mission Hospital when he started to experience breathing difficulties.

Despite the oxygen, his condition deteriorated further and he was moved to RMCH. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, said RMCH Deputy Director Saiful Ferdous.

Masum was well known in the sports arena and covered the South Asian Games and the Olympic Games several times.

He was the president of Rajshahi’s Sports Reporters’ Council and he conducted regular programmes at Bangladesh Betar.
