GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Global Covid cases pass 158 million

10 May

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached over 158,399,000 with more than 3,294,000 deaths and 106,920,000 recoveries.

The US holds the lead as the most heavily affected country worldwide, followed by India and Brazil.

India continues to report devastatingly high numbers of new cases and deaths, with 4,187 new deaths reported on Saturday, the highest seen in the region since the pandemic began.

Concerns have been raised about rising case numbers in countries neighbouring India, such as, Nepal and Pakistan.

As Pakistan battles a third wave of the virus, the country has entered an eight-day partial lockdown in the lead up to Eid al-Fitr being celebrated this week.

The Tokyo Olympics are due to take place in less than three months; however, with rising Covid-19 cases in Japan, a state of emergency has been extended until 31st May in several prefectures to prevent the situation worsening.

However, with only 0.9% of the population fully vaccinated in Japan, and many residents petitioning for the games to be called off, it is uncertain if they will go ahead as planned.
