HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s health authorities are investigating a suspected serious adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination as a man died two days after receiving the vaccination.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said it has contacted the Hospital Authority immediately to obtain more information on the incident for investigation, adding that it was too early to determine whether the vaccination was related to the patient’s death

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, a spokesman for the Department of Health said the 63-year-old man received the vaccination at Kwun Chung Sports Centre on Friday last week.

He subsequently developed shortness of breath on Sunday and sought medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he passed away later on the same day.

The spokesman said the department has contacted the Hospital Authority immediately to obtain more information on the incident for investigation, adding that it was too early to determine whether the vaccination was related to the patient’s death.

According to the established mechanism, the department will transfer the case to an expert panel on COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible. Assessment results by the panel will be released in a timely manner, the spokesman said.
