Tehran (ISNA) – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said that in the field of free trade and economic zones, a very good activity has been done in the last 8 years, adding, “Our effort was for the free economic and trade zones to turn from importers of goods to production and export centers and centers for attracting domestic and foreign capital”.
Speaking on Monday at the inauguration ceremony of national projects of free trade and economic zones organisation and the Department of Environment in the 85th move of the ‘Prudence and Hope for Surge in Production’ campaign, President Hassan Rouhani referred to the government’s efforts to develop free economic and trade zones, saying, “With the efforts made and the approval in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, today we have 15 free zones that we hope can put the country on the path of constructive interaction with neighbouring countries and the world”.
Dr. Rouhani further referred to the field of environment and the measures taken in this government to protect the environment and said that a huge set of environmental work has been done in the past 8 years to protect the environment and ensure people’s health, saying, “The eleventh and twelfth governments have been the Governments of Health the Environment”.
He said that this government has taken action in various sectors in public health, adding, “The field of environment, health sector and insurance development were the three pillars with which this government has sought the health of society and if we are fair, the difference between today’s situation and 8 years ago in the field of environment can be seen and we can see what great measures have been taken”.
President Rouhani described the efforts and measures taken in the field of restoring Lake Urmia as one of the most important and largest measures of the government in the field of environmental protection and public health, and said, “In this government alone, 15 trillion tomans of credit was spent on Lake Urmia and if no investment was made in this field, today Lake Urmia would have become a dry and full of salt environment that destroys the life of the region”.
Saying that the environment has many different dimensions, the President said, “In the matter of the environment, it may be necessary to cooperate with the countries of the region and neighbouring countries, and in this regard, important work should be done in international forums as well as political and scientific actions”.
Referring to the government’s attention to Lake Urmia, Dr. Rouhani said, “If Lake Urmia dries up, hundreds of kilometres around it will be affected by dust and salt, and a population of about 14 to 15 million people will be affected”.
The President said, “Many canals were dredged to restore Lake Urmia and farmers were asked to reduce their water consumption. With the measures taken, the lake has been on the path to restoration for several years now and its surface and depth have become wider”.
Dr. Rouhani described the government’s work in restoring Lake Urmia as lasting and great and said, “If this effort had not been made in the past 8 years and the necessary measures had not been taken in this direction, Lake Urmia would have been completely dried out today”.
