Body of suspected addict feared drowned in Kluang found

KLUANG: The body of a man believed to have drowned after jumping into a river to escape being arrested for suspected drug use has been found.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Low Hang Sen said that the body of the man was found at about 5.30pm on Saturday (Jan 23).

“The body was found about 150m from the scene in the Sembrong river on Jalan Mersing, Kluang.

“The body of the 33-year-old victim was confirmed by his mother.

“The police have sent the body to Hospital Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom in Kluang for a postmortem,” he said.

He added that the search and rescue operation, which started at about 5pm on Friday (Jan 22) has been halted following the discovery of the body.

It was earlier reported that the man, along with several other drug suspects had jumped into the river to avoid being arrested during a police raid.

ACP Low said the police had raided the area following a tip-off on drug distributing and consumption activities at about 4.30pm on Friday (Jan 22).

“Upon arriving at the scene, the police sighted several suspicious men under a bridge believed to be taking drugs.

“When raided by the police, some of them had jumped into the river to avoid being arrested. The police managed to arrest two of them,” he said.

He said that based on investigation on the two men arrested, there were seven people in the area during the raid and five had jumped into the river to escape.

“One of the men who jumped did no resurface and was believed to have drowned,” he said, adding that the fire and rescue department and the Civil Defence Force (APM) were then contacted to assist in search-and-rescue efforts.
