“We have negotiated with the Embassy of Bangladesh for the export,” said U Khin Han, chair of Bayinnaung Wholesale Centre. According to discussions with the embassy, the export is to be conducted via maritime route and the capacity of each ship will be more than 150 containers. Each container can load around 14 tonnes of onions, he said.
As the Ruili border with China is locked down, border trade has halted and trucks which transported goods have been forced to turn back, resulting in an abundant stock of onion in domestic market.
Between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of onions were exported this year during normal trading. Currently, more than 15 million viss of onions still remain at farmers and traders and about 15 onion trucks enter the wholesale centre a day. – Translated
