Aaron-Wooi Yik face complicated situation after loss to Ahsan-Hendra

PETALING JAYA: Expect Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to go on full attacking mode when they take on Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue-Nyl Yakura in the final match of Group D today.

The world No. 9 must not only win in straight games but they need to get the better of the lowly-ranked Canadians with a big-point margin.

This is to avoid a possible countback to determine the top two finishers for the quarter-finals from the group, in the event South Korea’s Choi Solgyu-Seo Seung-jae upstage Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in straight games.

2019 All-England runners-up Aaron-Wooi Yik have only themselves to blame for being in a precarious position after going down tamely 16-21, 19-21 to Ahsan-Hendra at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza yesterday.

They could have made the situation simpler had they nicked at least one game from the three-time world champions.

Aaron-Wooi Yik had their chance when they opened up an 11-6 lead in the second game, but they squandered it.

Although the defeat leaves them in second spot, the race for the last eight is still far from over as there’s still a likelihood that the third-placed Sol-gyu-Seung-jae can pull off a surprise against Ahsan-Hendra and finish as the group champions.

That’s because if three pairs have won the same number of matches and are equal in games difference, the ranking will then be established by points difference.

Said Aaron: “All we need is to win our last match tomorrow. That’s our only goal at the moment. Whatever happens in the other match is beyond our control.”

While Aaron admitted that they have underperformed, he was quick to add that they could not afford to dwell on the defeat.

“Not our best performance but there is another match for us tomorrow,” said Aaron.

“No time to think of failure right now, we just want to give our very best tomorrow.

“Wooi Yik and I will continue to persevere and work hard so we will not disappoint our friends whom I know will support us in the next game.

“Despite this defeat, I savoured this opportunity playing against my idol Hendra in the Olympics.

“The most exciting thing in sport is not about winning alone but also having the chance to make memories. I will cherish this opportunity of playing against Hendra whom I have admired since I was young,” added Aaron.
