Sabahans Ben and Nicholas get shot at top 10 finish in Phuket

PETALING JAYA: Ben Leong (pic) remains in contention for a top 10 finish at the Blue Canyon Phuket Championship in Thailand.

The 35-year-old Sabahan posted a third-round 71 yesterday to move to eight-under 208 and is in a six-way tie for 13th, six shots off co-leaders Chan Shih-chang of Taiwan and American Kim Si-hwan.

Ben responded well to a bogey on the second hole with birdies on third, sixth and 10th. He also picked up a shot on 13th.

But further bogeys on the 11th and 16th holes prevented him from climbing the leaderboard.

Another Sabahan Nicholas Fung (inset) also gave himself a shot at a top 10 finish after shooting a 68 to lie six-under 210 and joint 23rd.

He traded five birdies with a bogey to move up 28 spots from where he was at the start of the day.

It was a creditable run for Nicholas who endured a difficult opening round which saw him card a 75.

Both Ben and Nicholas had recorded some of their best results on the Tour in Thailand.

Nicholas was crowned the 2017 Queens Cup champion in Koh Samui while Ben came in tied-sixth at the Thailand Open in Chachoengsao in 2019.
