PETALING JAYA: The Terengganu Motorsports Track is turning out to be Azroy Hakeem Anuar’s (pic) favourite hunting ground.
The Idemitsu Honda Yuzy Racing team rider smashed the track record with a blazing 49.062 lap in qualifying for the CP150 race at the 1.371km track yesterday and will start as the favourite to win the race proper.
The 21-year-old Azroy is currently leading the standings by a mere six points but arrived for Round Four in Kuala Terengganu full of confidence.
It was on the same fast-flowing yet technical Terengganu circuit that Azroy won in 2019.
“The first day of practice had put our team in a very optimistic mood. Everything went smoothly for us and I was really happy with how the bike had been able to clock quick times right from the start,” said Azroy.
“With a new lap record in my pocket, I was able to spend the majority of the qualifying session pacing myself in preparation for tomorrow’s race proper.”
Azroy will have to stay on his toes at today’s race as his closest competitor for the 2020 CP150 crown, Mohd Helmi Azman from team Hi Rev SCK Honda Racing, clocked the second quickest time of 49.280.
After a rocky start to the season, team Petronas Sprinta Yamaha-CKJ Racing looked to have found their stride when the team’s junior rider Mohd Aiman Tahiruddin posted the third fastest time of 49.306.
But it was hard luck for defending champion and Terengganu-born Ahmad Afif Amran who broke his collarbone after crashing heavily during the first practice session and had pulled out of the race.
With a shortened season calendar, the injury may spell the end of Afif’s title defence this year.
Qualifying times CP150: 1. Azroy Hakeem Anuar (Idemitsu Honda Yuzy Racing), 49.062, 2. Mohd Helmi Azman (Hi Rev SCK Honda Racing) 49.280, 3.
