Abuden? Singapore govt ‘hires’ Phua Chu Kang to drum up support for vaccination

PETALING JAYA: Don’t play-play when it comes to vaccination to protect yourself and your family from Covid-19.

Phua Chu Kang, the Singaporean contractor with his trademark yellow boots, perm and mole, has returned in a quirky new music video with his wife Rosie to urge Singaporeans to get vaccinated.

Actor Gurmit Singh reprises his role from the long-running 1997-2007 MediaCorp TV show as Phua Chu Kang while Rosie is, as ever, played by Irene Ang.

In the two-minute video, the duo dance and rap to tunes that call on Singaporeans to get inoculated in the country’s immunisation programme.

The video was shared by the official Singaporean government Twitter account on Tuesday (May 4), with the accompanying captions “Don’t play play! Singapore’s favourite contractor is back to rally Singaporeans to get their Covid-19 vaccines!”

“Guess who’s back, it’s Uncle Phua,” says Gurmit in character, followed by his wife who exclaims: “And it’s me, Rosie!”

In the video, the popular TV and stage character addresses issues relating to vaccination such as safety concerns, as he also urges those with chronic diseases and the elderly to be inoculated against Covid-19.

“Don’t wait and see. Better get your shot. Faster vaccinate and don’t wait,” he says.

The video has garnered over 630,600 views and nearly 1,000 retweets on Twitter since it was published on May 2.
