Cops foil attempt to smuggle people out of Malaysia through Pontian

PONTIAN: The General Operations Force (GOF) have foiled an attempt to smuggle migrants out of the country near Kampung Sungai Buntu here.

GOF Battalion 5 commanding officer Supt Dimin Awang said they discovered the movements of a 32-year-old Indonesian national who drove five of his countrymen to a waiting point at Jalan Laut at 2.05am on Sunday (April 18).

“We thwarted their attempt and arrested the suspect and the other migrants, aged 24 to 65. The arrest led us to another transporter nearby, a 36-year-old Indonesian man who was ferrying nine Indonesians, including five women,” he said.

He added that all suspects were believed to have entered the country illegally and said that all suspects and seized vehicles were sent to the Pontian district police headquarters for investigation under Section 26(a) of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act.

Supt Dimin urged those with information related to the smuggling of migrants or contraband to get in touch with the Johor police hotline at 07-2212 999 or by heading to the nearest police station.
